Luray-Hawksbill Greenway
About 2 miles · Easy · Paved, in town
A flat paved path following Hawksbill Creek through Luray. Good for strollers, easy cycling and gentle walking, and the simplest option if you want a stretch of legs without driving anywhere.
Dark Hollow Falls
About 1.4 miles · Moderate · Shenandoah National Park
The closest waterfall to Skyline Drive and one of the most popular short hikes in the park. It is downhill on the way out and a steady climb back, so save some energy for the return. Parking near Big Meadows fills early on summer weekends.
Stony Man
About 1.6 miles · Easy to moderate · Shenandoah National Park
One of the best views in the park for the least effort. A gentle walk from near Skyland leads to a rocky summit at just over 4,000 feet with a wide western view over the Page Valley.
Hawksbill Summit
1.7 to 2.9 miles depending on route · Moderate · Shenandoah National Park
The highest point in Shenandoah National Park at 4,051 feet. The Lower Hawksbill route is shorter but steeper; the Upper Hawksbill route is longer and more gradual. Both finish at a stone observation platform with 360-degree views.
Kennedy Peak
About 3 miles · Moderate · Massanutten range
A steady climb through the Massanutten range to an observation tower looking out over the Page Valley and the Shenandoah River. Quieter than the national park trails and a short drive from several of our cabins.
The Appalachian Trail

Roughly 100 miles of the A.T. run the length of the park, and dozens of access points along Skyline Drive let you walk a mile or ten without committing to the whole thing. Park at an overlook, pick a direction, turn around when you feel like it.
Before You Go
Most of these trails are within Shenandoah National Park, which charges a per-vehicle entrance fee at the gate. The Thornton Gap entrance on US 211 is the closest to Luray, about 10 miles east of town. Take water, check the forecast, and be aware that phone signal is patchy along much of Skyline Drive.
