Hiking for parents with toddlersPosted At: 5/30/2008Shenandoah National Park Presents Hiking Program for
Parents with Toddlers on June 7
Shenandoah National Park will be hosting a “Trekking with Toddlers” seminar as part of National Trails Day events on Saturday, June 7, 2008. This program is for parents who have wanted to go hiking with their young children but worried about what to do to keep them interested, entertained, and safe. Here is the chance to learn from an expert. Join Jeff Alt, noted author of A Walk for Sunshine and avid hiker, to learn firsthand how to share nature with children for a fun and safe outdoor adventure. Jeff has hiked the more than 2,100-mile length of the Appalachian Trail on his own. Last summer with his wife and extended family, he carried his 21-month-old daughter on a 50-mile hike across a swath of Ireland. At the “Trekking with Toddlers” program, Jeff will provide tips on how families with children ages 2 to 4 can experience nature together on the trails in Shenandoah National Park. The “Trekking with Toddlers” program is free but reservations are required. There is a $15-per-car entrance fee to the park, good for seven days. To register, go to the Shenandoah National Park website at: http://www.nps.gov/shen/planyourvisit/resource_seminars.htm
“Trekking for Toddlers” is one of the Shenandoah National Park Resource Seminars designed for those who want to get to know their national park a little more personally. Seminars provide a more in-depth experience to learn from scientists, researchers, educators, and other experts about resource issues and recreational opportunities in Shenandoah National Park. Future seminars include "Butterfly Photography and Identification" on July 12, 2008, and "The Basics of Family Camping," July 19-20 and August 2-3, 2008. The complete Resource Seminar schedule can be found on the Park’s website at www.nps.gov/shen. The Shenandoah National Park Resource Seminars are co-sponsored by the Shenandoah National Park Association and ARAMARK. For more information, contact the Park’s Education Office at 540-999-3489. Festival of Spring in LurayPosted At: 5/8/2008LURAY, VA -- Plan now to give Mom a special Saturday gift for Mother's Day! Give her a day of great family-oriented outdoor fun, food and entertainment in the beautiful Town of Luray..."The Town where the Caverns meet the sky!" The Town of Luray invites you to attend its 4th Annual Festival of Spring, 9AM to 6PM, Saturday, May 10th. http://luraydowntown.com/spring.html This day-long street fair will feature live entertainment throughout the day, more than 100 quality food, craft and educational booths, wine tasting featuring 10 or more Virginia wineries, and the greatest duck races ever seen on the Hawksbill Creek! The 2008 Festival of Spring will welcome 3 new events: a 5 kilometer race kicking off at 7:30 AM and ending downtown just as the Festival vendors open their booths, a Canine Frisbee Tournament featuring competition for Canine Frisbee Champions from across the Washington metro area and their owners, and a $1,500 Grand Opening Duck Race at 2:15 PM on the Hawksbill Creek that bisects the Town of Luray. In fact, ducks for the first race of the day are on sale at shops across the Town of Luray and online at www.luraydowntown.com. First prize for the first duck race will be 4 days and 3 nights in an elegant private home in Duck, North Carolina, valued at $1000. The next 10 ducks across the line will also take prizes at $50 or more. Remember, each duck for the first race requires a $5 donation, but winners do not have to be present to win. Then, beginning at 3PM, we'll launch another race down the Hawksbill Creek, with donations falling to $2 per duck or 3 for $5. The Festival, which is being organized by the Luray Downtown Initiative, will offer day-long fun and entertainment for the whole family -- everything from cotton candy and children's activities for kids to great crafts, wine tasting, and food vendors for adults. Large signs will point the way to many different venues -- kiddie rides at the Inn Lawn Park, photography, art and sculpture at the Art Warehouse, duck races on the Hawksbill Creek, and much more. In the afternoon, check out our many food vendors for your favorites from last year, or find a new blend of spices to whet your palate. Food vendors will provide everything from hot-dogs, to BBQ chicken, to grilled pork-loin sandwiches, to genuine pit-cooked North Carolina style chopped BBQ. We have all sorts of quality craft vendors offering jewelry, pottery, candles, sewn and textile items, woodwork...the gamut one would expect to find at a good street fair We already have wineries signed up for the expanded wine garden. Tasting requires proof of age and there is a fee, but it will be attractive to those who want to sample some of the best wines from the Commonwealth. We are really focusing on providing entertainment for the kids...not just Mom and Dad. We'll have a barrel-train ride, a moon-bounce, face painting, May-pole dance, cotton candy, and llamas to pet. Additionally, we'll have music by the 340 South Band and the Daryl Ray Band throughout the day. So, we hope to see you in Luray on Saturday, May 10th. You'll marvel at what Luray is doing to restore and invigorate its Historic Downtown areas. You'll marvel at the Art Warehouse -- a fantastic art gallery in the center of Town -- and the caliber of art from artists across the Shenandoah Valley. You'll marvel at the colorful murals local artists are painting on buildings throughout the Town. Enjoy the walkways and picnic areas of Luray's Greenway Park along the banks of the Hawksbill. The Greenway is even larger than last year and will be a great vantage point to see our fireworks display when we host another street fair on July 4th. In other words, you'll enjoy a great family day together and discover everything the Town of Luray is doing to highlight itself as "The Town where the Caverns meet the sky." The 2008 Luray Festival of Spring promises eight blocks of downtown Luray brimming full of Festival activities timed to make sure there's something to entertain the kids and give Mom a great day out of the house! We hope to see you there! 144th Anniversary Battle of New Market ReenactmentPosted At: 5/7/2008Stay with Allstar Lodging while visiting the Shenandoah Valley. We offer over 100 unique Cabins, B&B's or Vacation rentals. NEW MARKET, VA – Some 2,000 Civil War reenactors are expected to take part in the 144th anniversary reenactment of the Battle of New Market, May 17-18, 2008. The event, held at the New Market Battlefield State Historical Park, is the oldest battle reenactment in the nation, and one of few held on the original site. In addition to demonstrating Union and Confederate military tactics and camp activities, historical interpreters will portray civilian life during the Civil War era, including medical treatment, domestic crafts, and agricultural work. “Put the boys in, and may God forgive me for the order.’’ With these words, Confederate General John C. Breckinridge ordered 257 cadets of the Virginia Military Institute into combat during the Battle of New Market on May 15, 1864. Breckinridge’s 4,000-man army, including the cadets, went on to defeat a Union force of over 6,000 under General Franz Sigel in one of the south’s last significant victories of the Civil War. Overall, the Confederates suffered 531 casualties, compared to 841 for the Union force. Ten VMI cadets were killed or mortally wounded. The New Market Battlefield State Historical Park is a National Historic Landmark administered by the Virginia Military Institute and includes the Bushong Farm, where the family hid as the fighting raged around them, and the Hall of Valor Museum, which interprets the battle and the military history of the Civil War in Virginia. Both sites will be open free of charge to persons purchasing reenactment tickets. The reenactment literally “starts with a bang” at 1:00 PM on Friday, May 16 with an artillery duel in the town of New Market. A Union battery positioned along Old Cross Road (Rt. 211) will exchange fire with Confederate guns on Shirley’s Hill to the southwest. Both batteries will occupy positions similar to those taken at the start of the battle in 1864. On Saturday, May 17, there will be living history presentations throughout the day on the battlefield and around the Bushong Farm. At noon, the Stonewall Brigade Band of Staunton, Virginia will present a concert of Civil War music outside the Hall of Valor Museum. Organized in 1855, the band won fame as part of the Stonewall Brigade, named for its first commander, Gen. Thomas J. “Stonewall” Jackson. A Tactical Battle Reenactment will take place Saturday at 2:00 PM. Activities continue on Sunday, May 18 with a Civil War period church service and living history programs. The reenactment of the Battle of New Market occurs at 1:30 PM. Throughout the weekend, visitors will be able to purchase food provided by community non-profit organizations. The sutler area will offer a wide range of Civil War period products, as well as items from the Hall of Valor Museum Store. Parking is free. M&R Productions, a Gettysburg-based company that has managed the event for the past five years, is coordinating the reenactment. The event receives support from the Shenandoah Valley Battlefields Foundation and the Town of New Market. As a special incentive for families, one-day tickets for the reenactment are $10.00 for adults and $5.00 for children ages 6-17 (children ages 5 and under are admitted free). All tickets will be sold at the gate, with no advance reservations. [Local residents who present proof of a New Market mailing address will receive FREE admission to the reenactment.] All ticket sales are final (no refunds), and support preservation and interpretation of the New Market Battlefield State Historical Park. For more information on the Battle of New Market Reenactment contact the New Market Battlefield State Historical Park at (866) 515-1864 (toll free), (540) 740-3101, or visit the Park web site at www.vmi.edu/newmarket. 22nd ANNUAL VIRGINIA WINE & CRAFT FESTIVALPosted At: 5/6/2008
